Teeth Whitening

Today it's hard to turn on the TV or open a magazine without hearing about teeth whitening. Wherever you look people's smiles are getting whiter, whiter, whiter. What's it all about?

First of all, here's how it works. The hard white enamel covering on your teeth is made of calcium crystals. Under a microscope it appears like white colored sea corral with an abundance of porous spaces. Over time these spaces fill up with organic substances like coffee, blue berry pie and tomato sauce, you know, all the good stuff! All of the mainstream whitening products and methods use peroxide to bubble away those substances so the appearance of the tooth enamel is whiter.

The differences in teeth whitening systems come down to a few important facts. Peroxide (H2O2) is safe but it is slow acting and unstable. If it mixes with any water (H2O) including saliva it breaks down into inactive oxygen (O2) and water.

So, the question becomes, how much tooth enamel do you see in your smile and how can you keep the highest concentration of peroxide on the enamel for the most time uncontaminated by water? It must be noted that the color and porosity of the bare enamel is different in everyone and will influence the result.

At Brighter Day Dental we are excited that so many people today take an interest in the health and appearance of their smile. We feel that the full range of products available can have a positive effect. We continue to follow and test the latest options and offer what we have found provide the best results.  Here's what we'll do:

  • First, our dentists will thoroughly examine the health of your teeth and gums. It is important to be in good dental health before whitening because the concentrated peroxide could aggravate existing cavities or unhealthy gums. We will also discuss your expectations.
  • Next, we will make precise molds of your teeth. From these, our in-house lab will make the best custom-fitting flexible trays. THIS IS THE KEY! These trays must create a seal at the gum line where the enamel is the thinnest and moisture contamination is most likely. Then, the active peroxide can have its maximum effect on your enamel.
  • The staff at Brighter Day Dental will give you personal instructions on how to produce the maximum benefits safely and comfortably. Please follow our instructions carefully and only use the materials we provide. You're ready for a bright new look!

Is Tooth Whitening Right For You?

The American Dental Association has given its seal of approval to a wide range of tooth whitening products because research has found them to be both safe and effective.

Tooth whitening has a higher than 90% success rate and its effects have been shown to last up to four years depending on variables such as eating and smoking habits, age and condition of enamel.

You may experience the short-term side effect of sensitivity to hot and cold foods. This normally disappears within 48 hours.

Tooth whitening will NOT whiten existing dental work such as fillings, bonding, veneers, crowns and dentures.

Tooth whitening is NOT recommended if you have tooth decay, gum disease, sensitive teeth, worn out enamel or if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
